Overview

The Access Virus is one of the most iconic virtual analogue synthesizer families ever produced. Introduced in 1997 by German manufacturer Access Music, the Virus quickly earned a reputation for its powerful sound engine, exceptional modulation capabilities, and unmistakable character. From lush pads and evolving textures to aggressive basses, cutting leads and complex soundscapes, the Virus has become a staple of electronic music production across genres including trance, techno, house, industrial, synthwave and film scoring.

Unlike many virtual analogue synthesizers of its era, the Virus combines classic subtractive synthesis with wavetable oscillators, hypersaw-style unison, extensive modulation, built-in effects and deep multi-timbral performance capabilities. This versatility has helped it remain a favourite among both studio producers and live performers for decades.

Over its lifetime, the Virus evolved through several hardware generations, including the Virus A, Virus B, Virus C, Virus TI, and Virus TI2. While each generation expanded the synthesis engine and added new features, they all share the distinctive Virus sound and a largely consistent programming philosophy.

The Virus TI series represented the culmination of the platform, introducing Total Integration (TI) with USB connectivity, enhanced processing power, additional oscillators and effects, and one of the most comprehensive modulation systems available in a hardware synthesizer. Even years after production ended, the Virus remains highly sought after thanks to its unique sonic character and enduring build quality.
